HONOURING THE PAST AND ENSURING THE FUTURE
I am proud to be a partner with the Jewish Foundation, and privileged to be part of the Book of Life which gives our lives meaning and a tribute to our memories. Our memories and stories help define us, and will always be a source of strength, wisdom and blessing for us and our children.
Revisiting stories from the past gives direction for the continuation of our work for the future. The intent is to allow us to see and understand better those who we serve and ourselves, as well as to enable others to do the same.
The Book of Life honours the past, ensures the future and continues to preserve the passion and unchanging values of our Jewish heritage and families. The struggles to overcome legacies and injustices of the past pays tribute to the memory of Olivia and Eugene Schonberger, survivors and hidden children of the Holocaust who had the courage to build a life in Toronto after World War II and honours Rita and Al Pastor for their active involvement, passion and participation in family and community life.
The strong sense of community involving people across the social spectrum and feeling deeply towards the commitment of the journey is central to philanthropic experiences from the past which resonates today and into the future. There is a strong foundation of identity and pride for social equality and active citizenship which enhances and empowers participation through volunteering, professional leadership and gift giving.
There are many ways of giving and accomplishing goals through life achievement and dedication for the enrichment of others. Philanthropy has created precious opportunities for new levels of achievement and inclusion in the community, the arts, and education, research and sport programs for children, teenagers, adults and seniors with special needs. Further philanthropic efforts in Toronto, Israel and around the world has developed a planetary consciousness and renewed identity as community and world citizen.
At the core of the vision is a philanthropic spirit, that is deeply rooted in civil responsibility and helping to enrich and sustain the quality of life in Greater Toronto. Making a difference in the lives of others has been rewarding and an enduring gift that will be a legacy for the future.
