Howard & Donna Winick

Toronto is a complex and diversified city of more than 3,000,000 residents.

People who live here are confronted with choosing among many different and worthwhile charities.

Where to give your money is always a complex issue. How do you decide?

My wife Donna and I are not wealthy people. We work hard for what we have. We have always tried to give what we can to UJA Federation and always honour our pledges. To us it is the most important charity in Toronto. We also give smaller amounts to other worthwhile charities and research facilities.

Several years ago when we had some extra money, it was natural for us to meet with staff at the Foundation of UJA Federation and establish a philanthropic fund. We are proud of our fund and are very happy with the outcome of our collaboration with the Foundation. Our fund has appreciated because the monies have been well managed and wisely invested by the team of professionals that administer the fund. Also, the Foundation staff is very responsive to our suggestions when making distributions from the fund.

They include us in the decision making process and often bring worthwhile funding suggestions to us for consideration. These suggestions are well thought out and are for projects that are important to the community and to us. Donna and I have never turned down any of these funding ideas. I recall one year being presented with the opportunity to be a part of the Yad V'shem celebration in our city. That was very meaningful for us.

Our experience is just one example of what a family can accomplish with it’s giving. UJA Federation is our voice in our city. UJA Federation is concerned with the lives of Jews here in Toronto and in Israel.

We feel that the only voice for us is a strong UJA and we continually support it to the best of our ability.
